How we’re making an impact—together.

World Toilet Organization and Brondell

The global water and sanitation crisis.

Typically, we don’t think twice about our daily flush, but that’s not the case for everyone. Did you know that 4.5 billion people—roughly 60% of the world’s population—don’t have access to a safely functioning toilet at home? According to the Center for Disease Control (CDC), this lack of proper sanitation facilities poses serious health and environmental risks to communities around the world.

A 2023 study conducted by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) found that women and girls are disproportionally affected by the water and sanitation crisis. Women and girls are typically responsible for fetching water, leading to exposure to unsafe conditions caused by lack of proper sanitation facilities. They are also more likely to feel unsafe using a toilet outside of the home and disproportionately feel the impact of lack of hygiene.

World Toilet Organization (WTO) is a global non-profit that’s dedicated to improving toilet and sanitation conditions around the world. Through education, advocacy, and building local marketplace opportunities, WTO empowers individuals and organizations to advocate for cleaner and safer sanitation facilities in their communities.

In 2001, WTO established the World Toilet Summit to provide an international platform for toilet associations, governments, academic institutions, foundations, UN agencies, and corporate stakeholders. The summit was designed to exchange knowledge and leverage media and corporate support to promote clean sanitation and improved public health policies. Through increased attention and education regarding the global sanitation crisis, WTO has been successful in creating a movement that calls for toilet education and the building of sanitation facilities across the globe.
