March 22nd is World Water Day, and we’re celebrating all month long in the best way we know how—by giving back. We’re partnering with Seatrees on our Kelp the Planet campaign. In March, qualifying purchases made on Brondell.com will fund the planting of 1 square foot of crayweed kelp off the coast of Sydney, Australia.
Making a positive environmental impact is important to us. That’s why we’re teaming up with Seatrees to help plant a kelp forest. From creeks to rivers, ponds to oceans, we’re passionate about protecting freshwater and marine ecosystems—for the creatures who call them home and the good of the entire planet.
What is Seatrees?
Seatrees is a California based nonprofit on a mission to regenerate the health of our ocean planet to help reverse climate change, enhance biodiversity, and support local communities. They work with restoration partners to regenerate coral reefs, coastal watersheds, seagrass meadows, mangroves, and kelp forests around the globe. These projects support local community restoration efforts and provide tangible ways for individuals and brands to make a positive impact on the planet.
Why are kelp forests so important?
Found in temperate and polar coastal habitats, kelp forests are vital to the global ecosystem. Restoring kelp forests means ensuring the health and longevity of a natural habitat and resource that serves several purposes.

A home for marine life.
Kelp forests don't look like much from above the water, but below the sea, they're a bustling neighborhood. They provide a habitat and safe haven for many marine species—including sea otters, sharks, and grey whales. Think of kelp as an underwater city where aquatic animals can live, find food, and raise their young.
A resource for humanity.
Kelp forests aren’t just for ocean animals—they’re vital for humans, too. From cuisine to cosmetics, and pharmaceuticals to fertilizers, kelp forests play a key role in our everyday lives on land. They’re also a key ingredient for producing a fully biodegradable plastic alternative, which could help to substantially reduce plastic usage.
A carbon-reducing machine.
Atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a leading cause of climate change. It’s one of the major greenhouse gasses responsible for the warming of our atmosphere, which leads to a number of negative effects on our global environment. Kelp not only absorbs CO₂ as it grows—it also stores CO₂ on the ocean floor. Restoring and protecting kelp forests is instrumental in reducing atmospheric carbon and protecting our planet for generations to come.
